This is common in businesses like carpet cleaning and even restaurant management. You learn the business from the inside, and then move on to start your own with the training you have received.

Of course, the day with begin with a lot of apprehensions on your mind no matter how much you prepare for it in advance. Your attitude on this day and also the way you carry yourself will create a first impression for your colleagues and your boss. After all the years of having studied hard will now come to fruition. So, make sure you leverage your first job to give you the right start that you ever desired. And first day is the first step.

Firstly, remain calm in the morning. Nervousness is natural but don’t let it overtake you and affect your behavior. If nervousness leads to anxiety and shows on your behavior with others, it will lead to a negative impression of you. So, keep anxiety at bay and go with a confident and positive outlook. On the first day, when you reach the office premises, you will have to undergo an induction process. Generally, this is done for all levels- jobs for freshers, jobs for mid level or jobs for senior level. At office, an executive from the HR department would meet you and take you through all the formalities. Since you are a fresher and have no prior experience in these things, you would get all the required guidance and assistance required to go through this process. Also, you must not hesitate in asking and seeking help if you are stuck anywhere. Once the induction formalities are over, there might be an orientation programme on the same day. It might be conducted a few days later too. The purpose of the induction programme is to familiarize you with the goals, objectives, values and the ways of working of the organization.

After this, when you are seated at your desk, and are being introduced to the rest of the members of your team, make a little extra effort to get to know people in the same department. It is good to be inquisitive but make sure you ask intelligent questions. You would not look like a fool by asking questions but they must express your desire to learn and not as stupidity. You’ve just lost your job.    Give yourself a few days to deal with the emotions involved and then get moving toward finding your next position.   Under any circumstances, finding a job can be time-consuming.   Given the current economic climate, those job-seekers that are organized and dedicated to the search will get the positions. It’s important to realize that conducting a job search is a full time job.   Here are some guidelines for items you need to have on-hand for a successful job search as well as some help determining your daily structure.

Your New Workplace
Designate a place in your home which you can call your job-searching base.   All your lists and notes should be in one place.

Create an off-line file and an online folder dedicated to job search materials. Get a notebook solely for your job search in which you can take notes from conversations and research. Make sure you tag people as job search networking resources in your email contacts or address book. If you don’t have one already, you MUST get a calendar, there is nothing worse than missing an interview or scheduled call due to a scheduling error.


Getting Started – Deliverables List
Start by creating a list of the things you need to start your search. For example:
1.     Resume
You always have to have an updated resume at your fingertips outlining your latest skills and contributions to your previous companies.

2.     List of skills & potential contribution

Remember that people you know also have professional lives.   They may have contacts that you need to know.   Make a list of friends and family who will be helpful networking sources.    People want to help and they are better equipped to do so if you give them a really clear understanding of exactly what you need them to do.

6.     Set up accounts on LinkedIn and other business networking sites
Business networking sites are growing at the speed of light.   LinkedIn is adding a new user every second, according to some reports.   If you are not using it yet, do it now.

Measurable, Achievable Goals
One of the biggest challenges of a job hunt is dealing with the emotional ups and downs.   It’s important to keep a positive outlook during a job hunt, so one of the things you can do is to have small successes along the way to the ultimate goal of finding a new job.   Set small, achievable goals such as “find 5 new contacts to network with today”, or “set up an informational interview” or “connect with 10 new people on LinkedIn. ” Make sure they are realistic and achievable in a relatively short time span.  

Since job searching is your new job, you need to show up to work every day.   Set a realistic daily schedule with a do-able amount, so you don’t get burned out.   A schedule will allow you to achieve some of your short-term goals every day.   An example of a daily schedule may look like this:

If you have kids that are home, put time in your schedule to spend time with them.   Family time is one of the things we miss most when we work, so take advantage of this time to reconnect.


You are Your New Boss

It may sound strange to think of yourself as your own boss, but you need to wear multiple hats in your job search.   One of those hats includes the boss.   Don’t let yourself give yourself excuses for why you don’t want to work on your job search that day.   This is why your schedule needs to be comfortable enough that you won’t find yourself justifying why you really need to go fishing for a week.   Build in enough time for yourself so you can focus when it comes time to focus.

Checks and Balances
It’s always helpful to have an accountability partner.   Someone who, besides you, can be kept apprised of your progress.   It can be a spouse, friend, relative or even kids can make great accountability partners.   It feels good to report successes and activity to someone else.   It doesn’t feel good to report no progress, so designate someone as your accountability partner and report your progress to them (daily or weekly, whichever is more appropriate. )  Be specific with them as to what you need them to do.  

Time for Yourself
Most people are employed for the majority of their adult life, so when you are in between jobs, you can build time into the schedule for yourself – reading, walking, exercising, or socializing.   It shouldn’t replace the job search time, but feeling good is such an important part of how you project yourself to others, so schedule time for yourself into your day.

Time for Others
Volunteering builds self-esteem and is another networking outlet.   It also gives a hiring manager a greater depth of understanding of who you are and what you are about to see volunteer roles on your resume.   It will make you feel good about yourself and your contribution and that extra confidence is helpful during a job search, especially if it turns out to be somewhat more extended than you have experienced before.

Professional volunteering not only gives you a boost on your resume but it is an outstanding networking opportunity.   Offer to give a talk to an association or company in your area of expertise. Host a networking event.   Write a white paper for a publication.   Any opportunity to get in front of your peer group is one worth taking.

How To Bounce Back From Job Interview Rejection

Handling job interview rejection. You’ve had your job interview, you’re checking your emails, the post box and your phone. Then it comes through – “Dear John, we regret to inform you  . . . ” -   the polite rejection. This is not what you expected, you know you’re the right candidate for this job.

Job rejection shock is a hard fact of life. It doesn’t matter how good a candidate you are, one or more rejections are inevitable. Even in good times organizations usually have a number of candidates to choose from and in today’s job market supply clearly exceeds demand.

What are your options now? What do you do when facing rejection? Take these simple steps and come away from the experience wiser and better equipped to manage your next job application and interview.  

Contact the employer immediately

Phone or email and ask politely for constructive feedback. Ask questions like, “Where did I fall short of the requirements?”, “Can you give me some advice that will help me with any future applications?”  Avoid sounding defensive but rather focus on the future and suggest to the company that they can assist you by providing you with honest feedback. Listen carefully to their answers, thank them for their time and input and make good use of their advice.

Conduct an audit of your job interview keeping their feedback in mind. Ask yourself these questions:

Did I do my homework ?

Did you find out sufficient information beforehand about the organization and the job. Did you know all about the job you were interviewing for – the tasks, responsibilities, skills and abilities it involved?.   How much detail did you have on the organization? Did you know your strengths, weaknesses, selling points, suitability? Was the position a good fit with your skills and abilities?

Did I make a good first impression?

First impressions are critically important in job interviews as they set the tone for the rest of the interview. Did you arrive on time? Were you appropriately dressed? When you saw how the company employees were dressed did you feel comfortable with what you were wearing? Did you greet the interviewer with a firm handshake and use the correct name?

Did I listen carefully and answer questions appropriately?

Were you clear about what the interviewer was asking you? Did you respond with the relevant information? Did the interviewer have to repeat the question to get the information he or she wanted? Were your responses fluent and well organized or did you stumble over your answers? Did you get the job interview questions you expected or were you taken by surprise?

Did I show my enthusiasm for the position?

Did you use positive words and project a positive message with your body language? Did you display confidence in your ability to do the job or were you nervous and unsure? Alternatively were you too pushy and dominated the discussion?

Did I have informed and relevant questions to ask the interviewer?

Did you prepare good and insightful questions to ask about the company, the job, the management and the industry? Were your questions based on solid information you had gathered during your interview preparation or did you quickly think up something to ask when the interviewer said, “Do you have any questions?”

Did I have the right documentation with me?

Did you have a portfolio with you that included references, work samples, extra copies of your resume? When the interviewer asked for a document were you able to produce it?

Did I close the interview and follow up appropriately?

Job interview rejection can be the result of the final minutes of the interview.   Had you addressed all the interviewer’s concerns before leaving?  Did you restate your interest in the position and close with an expression of appreciation for the interview opportunity?  Did you follow up with a thank you letter within 24 hours of the job interview?

Thinking through your job application and interview in a constructive and proactive way will allow you to work through your disappointment at job interview rejection and shift your focus to the next opportunity. Build on what you have learned and try to keep positive. Keep looking for the right opportunity and stay determined. Getting the right job requires dedication, a planned approach and a great deal of focused effort – it’s a job in itself!  Go through the pre interview checklist to make sure you are properly prepared to make the best impression in your job interview. How To Use A Job

Before you start that job search, let me ask you a question: Why would you want a job? Just for a paycheck? Instead of assuming that a job is a necessity that we all must have (it really isn’t), consider what is actually important to you.

Once you have determined what you really want, you may very well want a job. But you can then see it as a means to accomplish those goals that matter to you. It may also be a “limited engagement. ” With that approach in mind, I have to say that jobs do have their advantages. Here are some ways to use a job temporarily, to get closer to more important goals.

1. To Save Money

Whatever your goals may be, a job is a way to create income – some of which can be diverted into savings for future plans. I used a good job to pay off my first home early – and then quit the job. Other jobs have been devoted to earning travel money. A job can provide the money for a business as well.

2. To Buy Time

People often claim they don’t have time for what is important – even for the ones they love. This is rarely true. Stop using a job to buy nice clothes or better furniture or whatever else you use it for, and it can buy time instead. Save enough money to take a week off from work to play with the dogs if that is what you really want.

3. To Get Business Training

Most people think of a job as an end in itself, or a means to a better job. But in many fields it is possible to use a job as a training exercise for owning a business. This is common in businesses like carpet cleaning and even restaurant management. You learn the business from the inside, and then move on to start your own with the training you have received.

4. To Learn Skills

Some jobs are a great place to learn skills. Many people join the military for this reason, but you don’t have to go to that extreme. If you work as a tax preparer for one season, for example, you can apply the knowledge and skills you learn to all of your future businesses. A year as a car salesman might prepare you with the negotiating skills to become a great real estate investor.

5. To Be Where You Want

If you want to be where the best skiing is, but can’t afford more than the occasional weekend vacation, what do you do? Get a job there! The next time you are in Aspen, Colorado, ask a few bartenders and other employees how they ended up there. Half came not for the job, but for the skiing opportunities. The job is just the means to that. You might get a job in the Florida Keys if you want more sun and ocean.

6. To Pay The Bills

This is not an exciting use for a job, but it is necessary at times. Unless you really love the job you get, though, make this a temporary solution. Remember, whatever job you get, if you got one that paid a little less you still would have survived, right? So pay the bills, but also put a little bit of every paycheck aside and start looking for ways to pursue goals that are more interesting. At the very least continue your job search until you take one more step up in income, and then save even more towards those important goals.
